About Parent Coaching & Parent-Child Training

At Adora Bright Pediatric Therapy Services in Richmond Hill, Parent-Child Training (PCT) and parent coaching programs help families develop the skills and strategies needed to support their child’s development in everyday environments.

Parents and caregivers play a central role in a child’s learning. Parent coaching provides practical guidance that helps families support communication, emotional regulation, behaviour, and independence during daily routines at home, school, and in community settings.

Adora Bright is a registered Ontario Autism Program (OAP) approved service provider, meaning eligible families may be able to access parent training and coaching services through OAP funding as part of their child’s therapy plan.

Our approach focuses on collaboration, practical strategies, and real-life application, empowering families with tools that support long-term success.

Core Clinical Services

MULTIDISCIPLINARY FAMILY SUPPORT

Parent coaching at Adora Bright is delivered within a multidisciplinary clinical model, where families receive guidance informed by several professional disciplines.

Parent coaching may incorporate strategies from:

  • Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)
  • Speech-Language Pathology (SLP)
  • Occupational Therapy (OT)

This integrated approach allows families to receive comprehensive support for communication, behaviour, sensory regulation, and independence skills.

Our clinicians work collaboratively with parents to ensure strategies are practical, individualized, and aligned with each child’s developmental goals.

WHAT IS PARENT-CHILD TRAINING (PCT)?

Parent-Child Training (PCT) is a structured coaching approach where clinicians work directly with parents to help them learn strategies that support their child’s development during everyday routines.

Instead of focusing only on therapy sessions, PCT helps families apply strategies during real-life situations such as:

  • Play and interaction
  • Mealtime routines
  • Dressing and daily tasks
  • Homework and learning activities
  • Social interactions with siblings or peers

This approach helps children learn and practise skills in natural environments where learning happens most often.

WHAT PARENT COACHING CAN SUPPORT

Parent coaching can support a wide range of developmental areas.

Families may receive guidance related to:

Communication Development
Parents learn strategies to encourage communication during daily interactions.

Examples may include:

  • Encouraging requests and expressive language
  • Expanding vocabulary during play
  • Supporting back-and-forth conversation
  • Responding to communication attempts

These strategies help children develop functional communication skills in everyday routines.

EMOTIONAL REGULATION & BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT

Parent coaching helps families understand behaviour and develop strategies to support regulation.

Parents may learn how to:

  • Respond to challenging behaviours
  • Support emotional regulation
  • Use reinforcement strategies
  • Structure routines that support calm and focus
  • Help children manage transitions

These tools help children develop coping strategies and self-regulation skills.

PLAY & SOCIAL INTERACTION

Play is one of the most important ways children learn.

Parent coaching can help families support:

  • Shared play and interaction
  • Turn-taking and joint attention
  • Expanding play ideas and creativity
  • Peer interaction skills

These strategies help children build social confidence and meaningful connections.

INDEPENDENCE & DAILY LIVING SKILLS

Parent coaching also supports the development of independence during everyday routines.

Parents may learn strategies that support:

  • Dressing and self-care routines
  • Feeding and mealtime participation
  • Toileting routines
  • Completing tasks independently
  • Following daily schedules

These skills help children build confidence and independence across environments.

Parent Coaching for Different Developmental Stages

Parent coaching can support families across different developmental stages.

WHY PARENT COACHING MATTERS

Children spend most of their time outside therapy sessions. When families are equipped with effective strategies, children have more opportunities to practise and strengthen their skills throughout the day.

Parent coaching helps:

  • Reinforce skills learned in therapy
  • Improve consistency across environments
  • Strengthen the parent-child relationship
  • Build confidence for caregivers
  • Support long-term developmental progress

By empowering families with knowledge and strategies, children benefit from ongoing support during everyday experiences.
